To give you a better idea of how to use SyPTPro for drive programming and configuration, here are some practical examples of common drive automation scenarios and applications:

Example 1: Speed control of a conveyor belt using a Unidrive M AC drive and a SM-Applications Plus option module

In this example, we will use SyPTPro to program and configure a Unidrive M AC drive and a SM-Applications Plus option module to control the speed of a conveyor belt that transports boxes from one location to another. The conveyor belt has a sensor that detects the presence of boxes and sends a signal to the option module. The option module then adjusts the speed of the drive according to the number of boxes on the belt. The goal is to maintain a constant flow of boxes without overloading or underloading the belt.

To achieve this goal, we will use the following steps:

  • Connect the PC to the drive and the option module using a USB cable.

  • Launch SyPTPro and create a new project.

  • Select Unidrive M as the drive type and SM-Applications Plus as the option module type in the project settings.

  • Go to the Parameter Browser and set the following parameters for the drive and the option module:

  • Drive mode: Closed loop vector

  • Motor rated voltage: 230 V

  • Motor rated current: 10 A

  • Motor rated frequency: 50 Hz

  • Motor rated speed: 1500 rpm

  • Motor rated power: 2.2 kW

  • Motor rated torque: 14 Nm

  • Encoder type: Incremental

  • Encoder resolution: 1024 pulses/rev

  • Encoder direction: Positive

  • Digital input 1 function: Start/stop

  • Digital input 2 function: Forward/reverse

  • Digital input 3 function: Jog

  • Digital input 4 function: Sensor input

  • Analog input 1 function: Speed reference

  • Analog input 2 function: Not used

  • Digital output 1 function: Drive ready

  • Digital output 2 function: Drive running

  • Digital output 3 function: Drive fault

  • Digital output 4 function: Not used

  • Analog output 1 function: Motor speed feedback

  • Analog output 2 function: Motor torque feedback

  • Option module baud rate: 115200 bps

  • Option module protocol: Modbus RTU

  • Option module address: 1

  • Go to the Project Explorer and add a new program to the option module.

  • Go to the Editor and select ladder diagram as the programming language.

  • Create a ladder diagram program that performs the following logic:

  • Read the sensor input from digital input 4 and store it in a memory bit.

  • If the sensor input is high, increment a counter by 1 and store it in a memory word.

  • If the sensor input is low, decrement the counter by 1 and store it in the same memory word.

  • Read the counter value and compare it with a preset limit (e.g. 10) using a greater than or equal to instruction.

  • If the counter value is greater than or equal to the limit, write a speed reference value (e.g. 50%) to analog output 1 using a move instruction.

  • If the counter value is less than the limit, write a different speed reference value (e.g. 100%) to analog output 1 using another move instruction.

  • End the program with an end instruction.

  • Compile, download, and run the program on the option module.

  • Test the program by placing boxes on and off the conveyor belt and observing the speed of the drive and the belt.

You have successfully programmed and configured a Unidrive M AC drive and a SM-Applications Plus option module to control the speed of a conveyor belt using SyPTPro.

Example 2: Position control of a robotic arm using a Digitax HD Servo drive and a SM-Ethernet option module

In this example, we will use SyPTPro to program and configure a Digitax HD Servo drive and a SM-Ethernet option module to control the position of a robotic arm that performs various tasks, such as picking, placing, welding, etc. The robotic arm has an encoder that measures its position and sends it to the option module. The option module then controls the position of the drive according to a predefined sequence of commands. The goal is to achieve precise and accurate position control of the robotic arm with smooth and fast motion.

To achieve this goal, we will use the following steps:

  • Connect the PC to the drive and the option module using an Ethernet cable.

  • Launch SyPTPro and create a new project.

  • Select Digitax HD as the drive type and SM-Ethernet as the option module type in the project settings.

  • Go to the Parameter Browser and set the following parameters for the drive and the option module:

  • Drive mode: Position control

  • Motor rated voltage: 230 V

  • Motor rated current: 5 A

  • Motor rated frequency: 200 Hz

  • Motor rated speed: 3000 rpm

  • Motor rated power: 1.5 kW

  • Motor rated torque: 4.8 Nm

  • Encoder type: Incremental

  • Encoder resolution: 4096 pulses/rev

  • Encoder direction: Positive

  • Digital input 1 function: Enable

  • Digital input 2 function: Home

  • Digital input 3 function: Not used

  • Digital input 4 function: Not used

  • Analog input 1 function: Not used

  • Analog input 2 function: Not used

  • Digital output 1 function: Drive ready

  • Digital output 2 function: Drive running

  • Digital output 3 function: Drive fault

  • Digital output 4 function: Drive homed

  • Analog output 1 function: Motor position feedback

  • Analog output 2 function: Motor speed feedback

  • Option module IP address: 192.168.1.100

  • Option module subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

  • Option module gateway: 192.168.1.1

  • Option module protocol: Ethernet/IP

  • Option module address: 1

  • Go to the Project Explorer and add a new program to the option module.

  • Go to the Editor and select structured text as the programming language.

  • Create a structured text program that performs the following logic:

  • Declare and initialize variables for the position commands, the encoder feedback, and the control flags.

  • Create a sequence of position commands that correspond to different tasks of the robotic arm, such as pick, place, weld, etc. Each command should have a target position, a speed, and an acceleration.

  • Create a loop that executes the position commands one by one, using the following steps:

  • Read the encoder feedback from analog output 1 and store it in a variable.

  • Compare the encoder feedback with the target position using a tolerance value (e.g. 0.1).

  • If the encoder feedback is within the tolerance, set a flag to indicate that the position command is completed.

  • If the encoder feedback is not within the tolerance, write the target position, speed, and acceleration to analog input 1 using a move instruction.

  • Wait for a delay time (e.g. 0.5 seconds) before executing the next position command.

  • End the loop when all the position commands are completed.

  • End the program with an end instruction.

  • Compile, download, and run the program on the option module.

  • Test the program by observing the motion of the robotic arm and verifying that it performs the tasks according to the position commands.

You have successfully programmed and configured a Digitax HD Servo drive and a SM-Ethernet option module to control the position of a robotic arm using SyPTPro.
