If you are looking for a new and effective way to surprise and challenge your opponents in chess, you might be interested in A Cunning Chess Opening Repertoire for White, a book by Graham Burgess, published by Gambit Publications in 2013. This book offers a complete and coherent opening system for White based on 1.d4 and 2.Nf3, with various options depending on Black's responses. In this article, we will review the main features and lines of this repertoire, and show you how to download the book in PDF format.

The main features of the repertoire

What makes this repertoire cunning and attractive for White players? Here are some of the reasons:

Based on 1.d4 and 2.Nf3

The repertoire starts with the moves 1.d4 and 2.Nf3, which are solid and flexible moves that can lead to different types of positions. White does not commit to any specific pawn structure or central strategy, but keeps his options open. This allows White to avoid some of the main theoretical lines that Black may have prepared, and to choose the most suitable plan according to the situation.

Flexible and adaptable to different situations

The repertoire does not rely on memorizing long and complicated variations, but on understanding the ideas and themes behind each move. White can adjust his play depending on his personal style, his opponent's preferences, and the tournament situation. For example, White can choose between more aggressive or more positional lines, or between more complex or more simple positions. White can also switch between different openings within the repertoire, such as the Queen's Gambit, the Torre Attack, or the Counter-Fianchetto.

Psychological and practical advantages

The repertoire also gives White some psychological and practical advantages over his opponents. By playing less common or less explored lines, White can take his opponents out of their comfort zone and force them to think on their own from an early stage. This can create problems for Black, who may not be familiar with the typical plans and tactics of these openings, or who may waste time and energy trying to find the best moves. White can also exploit some of the weaknesses or tendencies of his opponents, such as their aversion to risk, their lack of confidence, or their overconfidence.

The main lines of the repertoire

What are the main openings that White can play within this repertoire? Here are some examples:

Queen's Gambit: Main Line with 5.Bf4

This is one of the core lines of the repertoire, where White plays a classical Queen's Gambit Declined with an early Bf4. This move puts pressure on Black's center and prevents him from playing the freeing move ...c5. White can also create some threats on the kingside with moves like Ne5, Qf3, or Qh3. Black has several ways to react, such as playing ...dxc4, ...Nbd7, ...b6, or ...a6, but White has good answers to all of them. For example, after the moves 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.c4 e6 4.Nc3 Be7 5.Bf4 0-0 6.e3 Nbd7 7.c5, White has a space advantage and can prepare a kingside attack with Bd3 and Qc2.

Torre Attack: Poisoned Pawn and other variations

This is another important line of the repertoire, where White plays an early Bg5 against Black's Indian defenses. This move pins Black's knight on f6 and creates some problems for Black's development. One of the most critical lines is the Poisoned Pawn variation, where Black sacrifices a pawn on b2 for some compensation. For example, after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Bg5 Bg7 4.Nbd2 d5 5.e3 0-0 6.c4 c5 7.dxc5 Qa5 8.a3 Ne4 9.b4 Qc7 10.Bf4 e5 11.Nxe4 exf4 12.Nd6 Bxa1 13.Qxa1 fxe3 14.fxe3 dxc4, Black has given up two pawns for some activity and pressure on White's center. However, White can defend his position with accurate play and enjoy his material advantage in the endgame.

Counter-Fianchetto: Against King's Indian, Grünfeld and others

This is a third option for White, where he plays a g3-system against Black's Indian defenses. This move counteracts Black's fianchetto of his dark-squared bishop and prepares to put his own bishop on the long diagonal. White can also play e4 and d5 to gain space in the center and on the queenside. Black has several ways to challenge White's setup, such as playing ...c5, ...d5, or ...e5, but White has good responses to all of them. For example, after the moves 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.g3 Bg7 4.Bg2 d5 5.0-0 c6 6.c4 dxc4 7.a4 Be6 8.Ng5 Bd5 9.e4 h6 10.exd5 hxg5 11.dxc6 Nxc6 12.Bxc6+ bxc6 13.Bxg5 Qd7, White has a clear advantage in development and can exploit Black's weak pawns on c4 and c6.
